Amazing news for Warner Bros./DC, as it’s been revealed that Joker has picked up the top prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
The chances of Joker winning a “Best Picture” Oscar just went through the roof, as it’s been revealed today that the DC Comics adaptation has been awarded the Golden Lion from a jury presided over by Argentine auteur Lucrecia Martel. For those of you who may not know, that’s the top prize awarded at the end of the Venice Film Festival!
The Todd Phillips helmed release topped controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski and his latest movie,An Officer and a Spy. That took the runner-up Grand Jury Prize to much debate.
Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips accepted the award, and we should have comments from them soon.
Interestingly, Phoenix didn’t win an award for his performance as the Clown Prince of Crime; instead, the “Best Actor” prize went to Luca Marinelli for his performance as Jack London in Martin Eden. Needless to say, all of this bodes well for Joker‘s chances of success when it hits the awards circuit next year, and it is expected to receive some attention at the Oscars.
With box office projections also looking good, don’t be surprised if Warner Bros. now commits to that DC Black label which will put the spotlight on various comic book characters in original, R-Rated stories.
